Working in the trades

If you work in the trades you must also meet provincial or territorial regulations and academic and work experience requirements. Examples of trades include plumber, carpenter and hairstylist.

Public safety and security, as well as the physical safety of workers, are concerns for tradespeople. For example, learning how to operate heavy machinery, handle chemicals or use complicated equipment takes time. Students training in these jobs work under close supervision until they can prove that they can work by themselves and offer a complete range of skills to employers and the public.

You need to show that your training, skills and experience meet the standard set for people trained in Canada. Each province or territory sets its own requirements for working in the trades, so requirements may differ from one province or territory to another.
