Qualifying to immigrate to Canada does not mean that your qualifications will be recognized

Qualifying to immigrate to Canada does not necessarily mean that your educational credentials and work experience will be recognized.

Starting in May 2013, if you apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), you must get an educational credential assessment (ECA). An ECA is used to verify that your foreign degree, diploma, certificate (or other proof of your credential) is valid and equal to a completed credential in Canada.

Getting your educational credentials assessed in order to apply under the FSWP is a different process than qualifying to work in a certain occupation in Canada.

When you apply to immigrate to Canada under any other immigration program, your educational credentials and work experience will not be assessed or evaluated while your immigration application is being processed.

If your occupation requires a licence in Canada, you will still have to get your credentials and work experience recognized. Often, you can start this process while you are still in your home country.

Note: The selection criteria for skilled worker immigrants in any Canadian province or territory except Quebec are not intended to match specific immigrants with specific job vacancies or occupational requirements.
